Formation of Eco-club
Eco-club is established in to motivate and stimulate our young minds.Everyone knows the importance of Environmental protection and mprovement. Major efforts are required to effectively spread the message of environmental conservation. So that the students are motivated to take active role in conservation. The teachers have a wonderful opportunity to create awareness, build attitudes and help students to take up activities.

Objectives
• To create awareness and impart knowledge of biodiversity conservation and local environmental issues among students.
• To create a ‘clean and green consciousness’ among students through various innovative methods.
• To develop skills of observation, experimentation, survey, recording, analysis,reasoning needed for conserving environment through activities.
• To make aware of proper attitudes towards environment and its conservation through action-based programmes.
• To realise the issues related to environment through field visits.
• To promote logical and independent thinking this will increase the spirit of scientific inquiry.

Calendar of activities for Eco-Club:
Activities:
• The students are asked to follow the newspapers for a week and clip out environment-related news and prepare a scrapbook.
• They are asked to do a survey of people in their neighbourhood to find out what people perceive as the major environmental problem of the area.

Monthly Activities

June

  • Implementation and Monitoring Committee would be established to facilitate the programmes
  • To bring up new group dynamics students from different classes. Students from Department of Botany and Zoology are involved along with that the student of designated units like N.C.C., N.S.S.,Youth red cross , Scouts and Guides are also involved
  • June 5th – World Environment day
  • Theme: Afforestation Visit to Social Forestry sites rich in bio diversity in and around
  • Eco-club members meet & discuss strategy on plan of action to be initiated on the theme of the month.
  • Prepare a list of sites to be visited by the eco club members in and around.
  • Visit the sites identified by you and collect information on the same.
  • Collect information on the plant species found there and the type of habitat.
  • Also prepare a report on the visit.
  • Discuss, review and record achievements of the Eco-club till date.

July

  • July 1st – Vanamahotsava Day
  • Theme: Rainwater harvesting Rainwater harvesting .
  • Collect data pertaining to rain water harvesting (RWH) structure, advantage, methods of including traditional practices.Prepare a model of Rainwater Harvesting for your college and collect all related materials required for RWH.
  • Invite a resource person to your college to speak on RWH.
  • Implement RWH method in your college and\or home record outputs.
  • If college is already implementing RWH, try to use the water collected for ground water recharge, gardening, for daily use in the college.
  • Discuss, review and record achievements of the Eco-club till date.
  • Preparation of documents, reports & forwarding to state nodal agency.
  • Organise mass awareness campaign on environment, mass demo on activities performed by eco club students; invite other eco club students, teachers, non eco club students to college.

August

  • August 15th – Independence Day, Ganesha Chaturthi Try to learn more about organic farming methods/ traditional agriculture
  • Prepare plan of action and discuss the essential requirement for organic farming. Collect details.
  • Prepare vermicompost pit in your college using all biodegradable materials commonly available like banana peels, dry leaves, vegetable waste etc.
  • Eco-club members meet and start a traditional organic garden for their college. Preparation of documents
  • Discuss, review and record achievements of the Eco-club till date.
  • Theme: Sustainable Agriculture regarding traditional agriculture practiced by their elders and few progressive farmers in and around.
  • Also meet to decide on the type of plants to be planted in college garden and kitchen garden at home.
  • Implement maintenance activities including manuring, pest management etc. in college garden.

September

  • September 1st – Ozone Day Theme: Ozone Layer & Noise Ozone day awareness campaign and Environment laws
  • Prepare charts and slogan on Ozone layer protection.
  • Write to Newspapers on Ozone. Mass awareness march.
  • Invite Doctor to speak on Health effect due to noise.
  • Create mass awareness campaign among the general public about Ozone layer.
  • Collect information of significance of Ozone.
  • Invite expert and learn about environmental laws, rules and legislations.
  • Study the Status of your garden and the condition of plants. Carry out maintenance work like deweeding, fencing etc.
  • Prepare a plan of action for the vacation.
  • Discuss review and record achievements of the Eco-club till date.
  • Preparation of documents and reports.
  • Organise mass awareness campaign on environment.

October

  • October 2nd -Gandhi Jayanthi
  • 3rd -World Habitat Day Theme: plastics – Plastic Waste management.
  • List out the use of plastics in your daily life and the drawbacks relating to the use of plastics.
  • Prepare a plan for recycling, reuse and disposal of plastics in an environment friendly manner.
  • Discuss and debate on plastics. Prepare for cultural activities.
  • Organise street plays, drama, rallies and other cultural activities related to environment friendly living.

November

  • November Deepavali
  • 19th – Natural Environment awareness Day
  • 21st – World Fisheries Day
  • Theme: Noise pollution– Eco-club members meet & discuss noise pollution and relevant issues.
  • Discuss the ill effects of noise pollution on health and environment with their elders, neighbours and teachers.
  • List out the ill effects and methods of avoiding noise pollution, make a handout on this and distribute it to people.
  • Create mass awareness campaign among the general public about sound tolerance and sound produced by the crackers.
  • Collect data on sound pollution.
  • Collect data on permissible limits of sound.
  • Create awareness about the after effects of burning the cracker.
  • Carry out maintenance activities in your garden.
  • Discuss, review and record achievements of the Eco-club till date.
  • Preparation of documents, reports & forwarding to state nodal agency.

December

  • 14th- National Energy Conservation Day
  • Theme: Energy Conservation of Energy
  • Eco-club members meet & discuss strategy and collect information on conservation of energy in their houses / college and use of alternative sources of energy such as solar, wind and mini hydro Prepare pamphlets/ brochures, slogans on energy conservation, visit houses and discuss energy conservation. List 20 ways of saving energy.
  • Have a campaign on energy conservation in village with cooperation of elders.
  • List out savings obtained in college and homes due to energy conservation.
  • Discuss, review and record achievements of the Eco-club till date.
  • Organise mass awareness campaign on environment.

January

  • 26th – Republic Day
  • Theme: Cleanly Environment Health and sanitation
  • Eco-club members meet & discuss effect of sanitation and hygiene for good health.
  • Collect information on sanitation and cleanliness and prepare a plan for cleanliness in college and vicinity.
  • Collection of data regarding diseases, detail unhygienic sanitation in villages, college premises.
  • Collection of data regarding precautions and remedial measures for diseases arising out of contamination of food, water etc.
  • Arranging lectures, presentations by local doctors, experts on health and sanitation issues, have a cleanliness drive among the eco club members such as practicing the habits of washing hands before and after food, bathing every day etc.
  • Have a campaign on the issue and educate other members of the college and local people create mass awareness about the effects of unhygienic habits on health.
  • Remedies and precautions to be taken to overcome these problems.

February

  • Theme: Water Conservation Water pollution & conservation
  • Eco-club members meet & discuss causes of water pollution and related issues.
  • Adjourn for data collection on sources of water, polluting agents, laws pertain to water.
  • Observe one day each week as water conservation Day.
  • Educating people about the effects of pollution.
  • Prepare a plan for saving the available water by redesigning the usage pattern, educate the students on water usage pattern, Educate the students to wash hands below trees planted at college premises.

March

  • 22nd – World day for Water
  • Theme: Environment Awareness Painting/Essay /Debate competitions on Eco – issues
  • Eco-club members meet & discuss strategy for painting/ essay/ debate competitions on various environmental issues.
  • Create mass awareness through posters, banners, slogans etc. Prepare plan of action for painting competition/ essay on various environmental issues/ debates on environmental issues and write to other eco- club members regarding the same.
  • Organise on the spot painting, debates, essay competitions for eco-club members, on the environmental issues such as energy saving, clean environment, conservation of water, our college premises, my village etc.
  • Discuss review and record achievements of the Eco-club till date.
  • Preparation of documents, reports & forwarding to state nodal agency.

April

  • April- 22nd – Earth Day Annual Examinations
  • Every eco-club will maintain a register of activities done, problems faced and how overcome.
  • Eco–clubs will also nurture and develop talents among its members in the areas of essay writing, slogan writing, Rangoli, Music-vocal and Instrumental, street play, Art, Debates, mass campaigning and writing registers etc.
  • Any successful project requires determination, dedication, commitment and an active role-model. We have also recognised the need to create a strong, consensual network between all members. We should always keep in mind the following maxims:

Activities in 2016-17

    1. The Plant saplings –Horticulture exhibition was arranged by Dept. of Botany on 13.9.2017.Competitions organised on Ozone Day (16.09.2017) Essay writing, Poster presentation and Power point Competition. Miss Sheetal Desai Professor of Dept. of Botany at Rani Channamma University, Belgaum, was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
    2. Vidnyan Mela and Wild life week 10.10.2017: on the occasion the Quiz competition, Science model exhibition and Essay writting was organized. The Winners were awarded by the Cash prizes of Rs. 3000/-, Rs. 2000/-and Rs.1000/- to the First, Second and Third Ranks in each category.

A Special Lecture by invited speaker Dr. S. R. Yadav Scientist and Head Dept. of Botany Shivaji University, Kolhapur, was arranged on the occasion.

  • Study tours were arranged by Botany and Zoology Depts.

Activities in 2017-18

1. Plant sapling exhibition by students of B.Sc. V Sem. on 13.09.2018. Students raised the saplings of ornamental and medicinal plants in waste glasses, boxes and bottles. .
2. R.L.S. College, Belgaum – National level students seminar – World Ozone Day
students presented paper in and National level students seminar on Ozone Day 16-09-2017. .
3. Ozone Day – 16-09-2017 : B. K. College, Belgaum conducted Quiz, essay competition & power point presentation competition in the college. Miss. Sheetal Desai, Professor, RCU, PG Dept Botany, alumni of our college was the guest on the occasion. .
4. Vidnyan Mela – Belgaum District level various competitions were held. Quiz competition held on 10.10.2018 by Dept of Botany. Dr. Vishnupanth N. Misale, ISRO scientist, Dr. S. R. Yadav, Head Dept of Botany, Shivaji University, Kolhapur were the chief guest for the Vidnyan Mela.
5. According to the circular by the Joint Director Office, Dharwad, for the awareness of importance of Millets, Pulses & Organic farming the Poster presentation competition was held on 23.10.2018 by B.Sc. IV sem. students. .
6. G.S.S. College, Belgaum – National level workshop on Waste Management – students participated in workshop held on 21.01.2018 & 22.01.2018.
7. G.S.S. College, Belgaum – National Science Day 2018 Nine students participated in the competitions held on 26th, 27th & 28th February, 2018. Six students participated in Painting, Photography, Ppt presentation, debate, search etc. Mr. Vinayak Sutar, B.Sc. VI sem. secured II Rank trophy in painting. 3 students, Miss. Sunidhi Jain, IV sem. and team participated in Science model exhibition. They secured IInd Rank and cash prize of Rs. 500/- . .
8. R.L.S. College, Belgaum – National level students seminar 4 students participated & presented paper on 01.03.2018 on the occasion of National Science Day.Miss.Sunidhi Jain, IV sem. secured IInd Rank and cash prize of Rs. 2,000/- .
9. B. K. College, Belgaum – National Science Day Science model exhibition was conducted on 27th & 28th February, 2018, on the topicWaste Management. Shri. Gopalkrishna B. Santangi, Regional Officer, Karnataka State Pollution, Control Board, Belagavi and Prof. Girish M. Karki, Head of Department, Zoology, Maratha Mandal Degree College, Belagavi were the chief guests for the function.
10. B. K. College, Belgaum B.Sc. IV sem. students visited Botanical garden of B. K. College to study different plants. .

Activities of Conducted in 2018-19

1. Plant sapling exhibition (Horticulture) was held by Dept. of Botany on 13.08.2018. Students of class V semester raised plant saplings and distributed in the class. Dr. Mrs. Jyoti Oulkar Head Dept. of Zoology Jyoti P.U. college was the chief guest . Bonsai plants were exhibited in the exhibition Principal Dr. S. N. Patil and Dr. Mrs. N. A. Jadhav Head Dept. of Botany spoke on the occasion. Dr. M.M. Mohite Head Dept. of History, Mrs. A.S. Patil Head Dept. of English, Mrs. N.P. Patil Head Dept. of Hindi graced the function.
2. On the occasion of National Ozone Day, Science Association and Eco-club organized Quiz and Poster Presentation. The topic for the poster presentation was Ozone Depletion and topic for quiz was Environmental science and general science.24 Students presented their colourful posters. 12 Teams of 2 students each participated in the Quiz competition. Dr. Mrs. N.A. Jadhav enlighted the students with the information on Ozone day and the need to protect it. Miss. Gouri R. Halgekar gave speech on the topic ‘Ozone depletion’.The cash prizes of Rs. 500/-, Rs 300/- and Rs 200/- were given to first, second and third ranks in each category by our chief guest Professor B. I. Vasulkar. Vote of thanks was given by Pawn V.Tarale.
3. The National level student’s seminar was organised by R.L.S. College, Belgaum on the occasion of “World Ozone Day”. The B.Sc. V semester participated in the seminar and presented paper through power point presentation.

      3. On the occasion of National Science Day, Karnataka Vidnyan Parishad and Science Centre Dharwad organized Discussion competition and Quiz competition.
      4. Miss Poonam Kamble and Mr. Sunil Chavan of class B.Sc. IV sem. Participated in the Discussion competition held on 28.2.2019.

Miss Rasika Ingale and Miss Shraddha Patil of class B.Sc. IV sem. Participated in Quiz competition held on 2.3.2019 and secured II Rank and cash prize of Rs.1500/-.

5.Water conservation Day was observed on 22.3.2019. Students of class II, IV & VI semester participated in the programme.
